Renting a car in Albania for the first time is straightforward if you know what to expect. The process differs from the standard international agency experience — no counters, no upsell queues, no hidden credit card charges. Here's what to do and what to check.
Before You Book
Decide on your itinerary before choosing a car category. If you're going to Theth or Valbona, you need a higher-clearance vehicle. If you're doing the Riviera and cities, a compact is sufficient and cheaper. EU, UK, and US licences are accepted without an International Driving Permit. Under 21? Some hosts require a minimum age of 23 for certain vehicle types.
What to Check at Pickup
Photograph Everything Before You Drive Off
Walk around the entire car before signing. Photograph every panel, the windscreen (chips count), all four tyres, both mirrors, the roof, and the boot floor. Do this in daylight and upload photos to cloud storage immediately so they carry a timestamp. This protects you from any disputes at return.
Confirm the Fuel Policy
Most Albanian rental hosts use a full-to-full fuel policy: pick up with a full tank, return it full. Check the fuel level on pickup and get it confirmed in writing or photographed. Returning a car below the agreed level typically results in a cash charge at the pump price.
Check the Spare Tyre and Jack
Albania's roads include gravel sections and debris that can puncture tyres. Open the boot and confirm there's a spare tyre (inflated) and a jack. Some older vehicles carry foam sealant instead of a spare — this won't help you on a mountain road far from a garage. Confirm which you have before leaving.
Check Tyre Condition
Look at tread depth. A tyre with minimal tread on a wet mountain road is a real hazard. If a tyre looks significantly worn, mention it to the host before leaving — put it in writing if necessary.
Insurance: What's Normal in Albania
Basic third-party liability is legally required and included in all rental prices. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reduces your financial exposure for damage to the rental car. Many Rental Auto hosts include basic CDW; some offer full CDW as an add-on at €5–15/day. Some travel insurance policies and credit cards include rental CDW — check yours before paying twice.
Deposits
Expect a cash deposit of €100–300 depending on the vehicle and host. This is held against damage and returned on car return if there are no issues. Note the amount and conditions for return on the rental contract. Rental Auto operates cash-only — no credit card block.
Carry more cash than you think you need. Between the deposit, fuel, and the occasional toll or parking fee, having €400 in cash at the start of the trip is sensible planning.
Emergency Contacts and Breakdown
Get your host's phone number before driving away. In case of breakdown, call the host first — they typically know local mechanics. Albania has no nationwide breakdown service equivalent to the AA or ADAC. Emergency numbers: 127 for police, 128 for fire and ambulance.
At Return
Return the car with a full tank. Remove all personal items. Do the walkthrough with the host present — photograph the final condition at the same time. Get written confirmation that the car was returned in the agreed state before handing over the keys. For airport returns, see /airport/tirana-airport for logistics.
