Shkodër is 110km north of Tirana on the SH1 national road — about 1.5 hours depending on traffic through the Tirana ring. It's the largest city in northern Albania and the logical base for exploring the Albanian Alps, Lake Shkodër, and the border region with Montenegro. Without a car, the mountains are effectively inaccessible. With one, some of the most dramatic scenery in the Balkans opens up.
Picking Up a Car in Shkodër
Shkodër has a smaller Rental Auto host pool than Tirana, so availability is more limited — especially for SUVs. Book ahead, particularly from June through August. Most hosts arrange pickup in the city centre or at your accommodation. Alternatively, pick up in Tirana and drive north; the A1/SH1 is a straightforward 1.5-hour drive with no complications.
The Road to Theth
Theth is 67km northeast of Shkodër. The first 40km on the SH20 are paved — good condition, mountain road with hairpin bends but manageable. The final 27km are gravel. The gravel section includes river crossings that can run 20–30cm deep after rain. In July–August in dry conditions, some compact cars make it; after summer storms, only high-clearance vehicles get through reliably. An SUV or crossover is the right call for this route.
Drive time Shkodër to Theth: 2.5–3 hours in good conditions, more after rain. The valley rewards the effort — Theth is one of the most striking alpine settings in the Western Balkans, with a canyon (Rrugica e Nuses), a waterfall (Grunas), and hiking trails to the Montenegro border.
The Theth road in late afternoon light, with the Shkëlzeni mountain behind the village, is one of those drives that makes you understand why people keep coming back to Albania.
Valbona Valley
Valbona is harder to reach directly from Shkodër — the road runs east through Kukës and north via Bajram Curri, around 220km and 4+ hours. An alternative: take the Koman ferry from the Koman reservoir (90km from Shkodër), cross the fjord-like lake to Fierzë (2.5–3 hours by boat), then drive 45km to Valbona. This combined ferry-drive route is one of the most memorable experiences in Albania. Ask your rental host whether the car is permitted on the ferry.
Lake Shkodër
Lake Shkodër (Liqeni i Shkodrës) is the largest lake in the Balkans, split between Albania and Montenegro. The Albanian shore is accessible from Shkodër by a 7km drive west on the SH25. The village of Shiroka has fish restaurants on the water and a small beach. The road continues along the lake shore — partly paved, partly gravel — toward the Buna river estuary. Any car handles the paved section; a crossover helps on the gravel.
Montenegro Border Crossings
Two border crossings to Montenegro are accessible from Shkodër. Hani i Hotit, 26km north on the SH1, is the main crossing toward Podgorica (75km beyond the border). Muriqan, 25km northwest, connects to Bar and the Montenegrin coast. Check explicitly with your Rental Auto host — some contracts are Albania-only.
What Car Do You Need?
For Theth: SUV or crossover, no compromise. For Valbona via ferry: any car (the road from Fierzë is paved). For lake shore and Montenegro: compact is fine. If Theth is on your list, the decision is made — book an SUV. See our guide to renting an SUV in Albania for model options and pricing, or visit /rent-a-car-albania for the full country overview.
