Why rent in Shkoder
Pickup & getting here
Shkodër hosts typically offer pickup in the city center, near Rozafa Castle, or along Rruga e Skënderbeut (the main avenue). From Tirana, the city is 110 km north via the A1 motorway — about 1h 15 min in normal traffic. If you're arriving from the Kosovo border at Hani i Hotit (21 km north), coordinate a pickup point with your host before crossing.
Driving & parking
City center roads in Shkodër are narrow — a compact car is significantly easier for the old town lanes. The SH1 road north toward Theth is paved to Koman but turns to gravel beyond; check your rental's off-road terms before heading into the Alps. Parking is free and plentiful around the castle area and the lakeside.
Day trips from here
Rozafa Castle is a 10-min drive from the center (or 30-min walk). Lake Shkodër viewpoints (5–10 km west). Lezhë is 55 km south (50 min). Theth village in the Albanian Alps is 73 km east — allow 2h on mixed paved and gravel road, and verify off-road terms with your host. Kosovo border at Hani i Hotit is 21 km north (20 min).
Best time to visit
May–June and September–October are ideal: dry roads, mild temperatures, and accessible mountain routes. The alpine road to Theth opens reliably from late June. Winter brings snow to the north and can close mountain passes. Summer weekends see day-trippers from Tirana and Kosovo — book at least a week ahead.
